Events during Winter in Japan

One thing you will notice if you live in Japan for a while is that there will be a lot of illumination events throughout winter in Japan. Many of these illumination events have to do with Christmas, but not necessarily all of them. This has become a thing in Japan because of the way Christmas is perceived in Japan.

In Japan, Christmas has very little connotations with Christianity or religion, but it is more of a special day to spend with that special person in your life. It has a vibe similar to Valentine’s Day but with more decorations and illuminations. Therefore, you will see many Christmas markets around Tokyo as well as Christmas trees decorated in plazas or shopping malls. The idea of decorating your house with Christmas-related things and buying presents for your partner (or friends and family) is what makes it popular here. Outdoor illuminations are a part of this.

These outdoor illuminations can be seen in many places across Tokyo, and they seem to get bigger and fancier every year. So if you are in Tokyo during this season, this is something you should definitely check out!
