The Ghibli Museum, located on the outskirts of Tokyo in Mitaka, has been one of the most popular activities for tourists traveling to Japan for years since its opening in 2001.
The Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli is one of the most famous in the world, and its films have enchanted millions of fans. The Ghibli Museum was personally designed by Hayao Miyazaki himself, and has been a must-see for all fans on their trip to Tokyo.
In 2022, Ghibli Park opened in the city of Nagoya, with a much larger space and more activities to offer. However, the Ghibli Museum still offers unique experiences that cannot be found in the Ghibli Park, so if you are a true fan of the animation studio, don’t miss either one!
When to Buy Tickets for the Ghibli Museum
Ghibli Museum tickets go on sale on the 10th of each month at 10:00 AM Japan time for the following month. For example, tickets for the month of July go on sale on June 10 at 10:00 AM. In addition, they have a specific entrance time: 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00. Tickets are good only for the specified date and time of entry, but they don’t have set exit times (once you enter, you can stay as much as you want until closing time).
As you can imagine, tickets sell out quickly after going on sale, so if you don’t want to miss yours I recommend to set an alarm on your phone to be alert!
How to Buy Tickets for the Ghibli Museum
Currently the only way to buy tickets for the Ghibli Museum is using the ticket booking service Lawson Tickets offered by Lawson, a convenience store chain in Japan. The good news is that tickets are sold online through its website and can be purchased even if you are abroad.
In the past, Ghibli Museum tickets were also available at some counters of the Japanese travel agency company JTB, which branches overseas. However, as of today this option is not available (but it’s expected that it will be available again soon in the future).

As April 2023 the admission prices are as follow:
– Ages 19 and over: 1,000 JPY
– Ages 13 to 18: 700 JPY
– Ages 7 to 12: 400 JPY
– Ages 4 to 6: 100 JPY
– Ages 3 and under: Free

How to Get to Ghibli Museum
The best way to go to Ghibli Museum is from Mitaka Station (三鷹駅) on the JR Chuo Line (JR中央線). It takes only 17 mins to get from Shinjuku Station to Mitaka Station, and then another 15 mins to get to Ghibli Museum from Mitaka Station on foot. You can also take a bus from the south exit of Mitaka Station and get off at the bus stop No.9.
