TeamLab Forest Fukuoka: The futuristic and progressive museum from teamLab

teamLab Forest Fukuoka

The world’s first digital art museum created by the technologist art group TeamLab “MORI Building DIGITAL ART MUSEUM: EPSON teamLab Borderless”, that opened more than four years ago in Tokyo was one of the most hot spots in Tokyo for both locals and tourists. The closing of Japan’s borders meant that for almost two years tourists couldn’t visit the museum, and unfortunately for those who wanted to go, it was announced that it will be closed in August 2022. The good news is that they are working on a new teamLab Borderless, larger than the old one, in a new location for Summer 2023.

If you are planning your trip to Japan before summer this year don’t worry, I have another good news. The teamLab Borderless is not the only museum of the group in Japan! In Tokyo there is the teamLabs Planets and outside Tokyo there are two other museums, one in Fukuoka and the other Osaka.

In this article I want to introduce you the Fukuoka museum, teamLab Forest Fukuoka!

teamLab Forest Fukuoka

The futuristic and progressive museum teamLab Forest Fukuoka opened in July 2020 and as it has happened with many other teamLab projects, it quickly became a success. The teamLab Forest have two areas under the name of The Catching and Collecting Forest and The Athletics Forest, where both children and adults can have a great and funny experience!

For those of you who may have heard of teamLab or seen photos and videos on Instagram but don’t know many details yet, teamLab is an ultra technologist art group. Various specialists such as artists, programmers, engineers, CG animator, mathematicians and architects work together to create an incredible and beautiful digital art museum. The first museum they opened was the MORI Building DIGITAL ART MUSEUM: EPSON teamLab Borderless in Tokyo and later the teamLab Planets also in Tokyo.

Although Tokyo is one of the most touristic destinations and the capital of the country, Japan has much more to offer. And the Kyushu region is one of the most popular for domestic tourism. It has a good climate in general, and is a quiet area, perfect for those who want to escape the crowds of the mega cities. The capital of Kyushu is Fukuoka, a big city where you can find a lot of leisure activities.

The teamLab Fukuoka museum is inspired by a forest, as the name suggests, but also by the ocean, as Fukuoka is a coastal city. Let’s learn more about the wonderful experience that teamLab Forest offers us! The museum is divided in 2 different areas.

Catching and Collecting Forest

As they explain in their official website, the Catching and Collecting Forest area is based on the concept of Catch, Study and Release. Is a really interactive zone where visitors can discover and catch different animals, study them and create their own collection book using their bodies and smartphones.

Moreover, depending on the season of the year the animals living in the forest and ocean change! You can enjoy exploring the forest and touching the animals, that will turn to face you or run away. Download the Catching and Collecting Forest smartphone application and have the best experience in the museum! When you use your camera, information about the animals you catch will be stored in the app’s collection book.

Athletics Forest

The Athletics Forest is probably the most interactive area! In fact, from teamLab they recommend visitor to bring a comfortable pair of shoes. In this new concept space, visitors can do creative physical exercise that trains spatial recognition ability. The idea is that people can immerse their bodies in an interactive world, promoting the growth of the hippocampus of the brain.

For example one of the most fun and favorite activities is The Rapidly Rotating Bouncing Sphere, with spheres rotating at high speed that slow down when people approach so they can bounce on. Or the Balance Stepping Stones, stepping stones that change the color when a person steps on them, emitting a color and tone that affect the space.

Visitors can also enjoy at Soft Terrain, a soft three-dimensional slope. Or marvel with the Animals of Flowers, seasonal flowers in the shape of wild animals.

Excited?? The teamLab museums are definitely one of the hottest attractions today and a must in your list of things to do in Japan. The colors, animals and atmosphere change depending on the time of the year, so if you go in different seasons you will have different experiences!

Also, as a foreigner living in Japan for over 6 years I understand what kind of things are difficult when you move here and I want to help other people in the same situation that I have in the past.
