Miyashita Park, located in the vibrant district of Shibuya, Tokyo, is an innovative urban park that reopened in 2020 after an extensive redevelopment. This project transformed the existing park into a multi-purpose space that combines green areas with commercial and recreational facilities.
With rooftop sports facilities, trendy shops, and diverse dining options, Miyashita Park is one of the few oases that we can find near Shibuya Station, and a good example of how urban development does not have to be incompatible with the integration of green spaces.

What is Miyashita Park?
Miyashita Park originally opened in 1953, quickly becoming a beloved community space for decades as it became the first rooftop park in Tokyo in 1966 (housing a parking lot in the lower levels). However, by the early 1990s its charm began to fade as homeless people took refuge there in the wake of the bubble crash, posing a revitalization challenge for Shibuya ward with the turn of the century.
The park eventually closed in 2017 and reopened in 2020 as we know it today. The recent redevelopment project was spearheaded by Mitsui Fudosan and aimed to create a modern, multi-functional space catering to the needs of both locals and tourists. The park now features a sports area with a skatepark and a bouldering wall, providing some original recreation options to the rooftop park.
Below the rooftop, there are many shops and restaurants, making it a versatile leisure option both for visitors and locals, and somewhat keeping the charm of the old green space that used to be in its place.

Enjoy Skateboarding or Bouldering or Even Beach Volleyball!
On the rooftop of Miyashita Park, you’ll find a modern skatepark, a bouldering wall and a sand court for sand sports. The skatepark is designed for all levels, from beginners to advanced skaters, featuring ramps, rails, and other obstacles. The bouldering wall offers a challenging experience for climbing enthusiasts, with routes suitable for different skill levels.
On the other hand, the sand court allows all kinds of sand-related sports activities like beach volleyball or beach soccer, but it’s only available for groups. These facilities provide a unique recreational space in the heart of Shibuya, encouraging active lifestyles and outdoor fun.
Relax in the Green Spaces
If you don’t feel like working out in the sports areas, do not fret! The rooftop park has plenty of areas for those who just want to unwind or take a leisurely walk. The park features lush lawns, shaded seating areas, and a variety of plants and trees, creating a peaceful and relaxing environment amidst all the frenetic activity around it. While not particularly tall, you can also have some nice panoramic views of the surroundings. Come here to read a book, enjoy the scenery or have a picnic with friends and family.
