Living in Shibuya city
The Shibuya area has been increasing in popularity among foreigners, especially the younger generations, such as university students and young adults.
1. Basic information of Shibuya City
Before I go into specifics, it’s important to know that there’s a difference between “Shibuya” and “Shibuya City”. When people just say “Shibuya”, that usually refers to the area around Shibuya station. However, when people say “Shibuya City” or “Shibuya-ku”, this refers to the ward of Shibuya(Shibuya city is one of the 23 wards that compose Tokyo).
Now that we have established what Shibuya city is, the following is some basic information.
Area | 15.11 km2 |
Population | 236,402 |
Population density | 15,647/km2 |
Neighboring wards | Minato city, Shinjuku city, Shinagawa city, Meguro city, Setagaya city, Nakano city, and Suginami city |
2. Apartment Rent Market Value in Shibuya city
Renting an apartment in Shibuya city is usually not cheap. On average, rent in Shibuya rank in the higher spots when it comes to price. The following table shows the average market price of apartments in Shibuya city. Of course, prices can vary a lot depending on the size, age, and location of the apartment.

3. Merits of becoming a Shibuya citizen
Reasons to live in this area include: having great transportation access to pretty much anywhere, being close to any kind of shops and services, and most importantly, being able to tell your friends abroad that you live in Shibuya!
If you have ever gone to Shibuya station, it may be difficult to imagine living in such a commercially vibrant area where it seems like no one can live there. But actually, if you look just a few train stations apart, you will find many residential areas that are quiet and still have access to many shops and restaurants.
Another attractive point about living in Shibuya city and becoming a citizen is the support you will receive from the city if you have children. Shibuya city will offer subsidies for childbirth, vaccinations, and other medical expenses for children. Some of the checkups for newborn children are completely free as well as some dental checkups.
Also, childcare fees are considerably cheaper in Shibuya city compared to other wards in Tokyo. This makes Shibuya city a good place to live if you have small children or if you’re planning on having children in the near future.
On the other hand, as I mentioned above, being such a convenient place to live makes it difficult to find a cheap apartment. However, there are some hidden gems here and there.

And I’ve lived long enough to somewhat understand the nuances of the Japanese culture that make this country such an attractive place to visit. Hopefully I can provide to you both the information you’re looking for and the information you didn’t know you needed to know.
