Following a significant building renovation and a brief uncertainty about the future of its much famed coffee shop, this iconic store has reopened to great fanfare, with a lot of new services. 

The revitalized Shibuya Tsutaya seeks to cater to an even larger audience with a wide range of cultural experiences for all kinds of interests. From book enthusiasts and Pokémon fans to those seeking unique café experiences, the new Shibuya Tsutaya promises to continue being a must-visit destination in Tokyo!

What is Shibuya Tsutaya?

Shibuya Tsutaya first opened its doors in 1999, quickly becoming a cultural landmark known for its extensive collection of books, music, and movies, both for rental or purchase. Located right in front of Shibuya Crossing, it has served as a popular meeting point and a symbol of the vibrant energy of Shibuya. The recent renovations have transformed Shibuya Tsutaya expanding its offerings and enhancing its facilities to meet the evolving needs of its visitors.

The revamped Shibuya Tsutaya spans multiple floors, each designed with a unique theme and purpose, like state-of-the-art studio on the top floors or the various lounges, cafes, and specialized shops. IT’s a completely new space that aims to provide an immersive experience for everyone. 

What to Do at Shibuya Tsutaya

Going beyond the chain’s normal activity as a retail space for books, music and movies, this special location is now a multi-level hub of culture and entertainment. Each floor offers unique experiences and attractions, so here’s a detailed look at what you can do on each floor:

Basement 2: Entertainment Wonderland

Basement 2 is dedicated to “Entertainment Wonderland” (shortened to “Entame”) open from 10 AM to 10 PM. This floor is a paradise for entertainment lovers, featuring a wide array of games, interactive exhibits, and immersive experiences with large 4K screens. It’s a lively and fun space where visitors of all ages can enjoy the latest in entertainment technology and attractions.

Basement 1: Shibuya IP Square B

Basement 1 houses “Shibuya IP Square B”, shortened as SIPS B, continuing the theme of engaging visitors with a wide variety of content from different artists or entertainment franchises. “IP” stands for “Intellectual Property”, meaning to convey that visitors will be able to get unique merchandise and interactive displays belonging to all sort of IPs.

1st & 2nd Floor: Shibuya IP Square A and Starbucks

On the 1st floor, visitors can also explore “Shibuya IP Square A,” also known as SIPS A, which has the same function as the aforementioned SIPS B, alongside the first floor of Starbucks, with takeaway-only counters. The Starbucks operates from 7 AM to 10:30 PM, providing a convenient spot for an early morning coffee or a late-night snack. 

The 2nd floor houses the seating space of Starbucks, which is open from 8 AM to 10:30 PM. This renovated space features a cozy but sleek design and maintains the counters overlooking the Shibuya Crossing so it’s safe to say it will continue to be one of the most popular spots in the area. 

3rd & 4th Floor: SHARE LOUNGE

These two floors feature the SHARE LOUNGE, a popular TSUTAYA Spinoff chain aimed at professionals in need of co-working or casual  meeting spaces or simply any visitor looking for a quiet space to wind down. Open from 8 AM to 11 PM, there’s an hourly charge of 1,500yen (plus tax) which includes free refills of soft drinks and snacks. The 3rd floor also has views of the Shibuya Crossing.

5th Floor: Pokémon Card Lounge

Pokémon enthusiasts will love the 5th floor, which features the “Pokémon Card Lounge”, where anyone can play Pokémon cards in a comfortable and dedicated space. Open from 10 AM to 10:30 PM, this lounge also offers private spaces for groups of four. Seats need to be reserved in advance via website but the merchandise area is free to access.

6th Floor: IP Bookstore

The “IP Bookstore” retains the same idea around IPs (Intellectual Properties) from the basement and 1st floors, focusing on being a unique bookstore that offers a specially curated selection of books, magazines, and merchandise related to popular IPs. Its ample space make it a good spot to relax and explore for unique finds related to your favorite franchises.

7th Floor: Collaboration Café

The “Collaboration Café” is a fun space where patrons will be able to enjoy limited time themed foods and drinks. The name of the café refers to the idea of hosting frequent collaborations with popular franchises and artists, making it an ideal spot for fans to enjoy exclusive menus and merchandise.

8th Floor (and rooftop): STUDIO

The 8th floor houses the “STUDIO,” a state-of-the-art space designed for creative collaborations and events, including the open air rooftop. This area is equipped with the latest technology to support a variety of activities, from recording sessions to live broadcasts or even small scale events like seminars. This is meant to be a dynamic environment where creators can bring their projects to life in an inspiring setting.

How to Get to Shibuya Tsutaya

Shibuya Tsutaya is conveniently located at the heart of Shibuya Crossing, one of the busiest and most recognizable intersections in the world. You can get there via Shibuya Station, a major transportation hub, serviced by multiple train lines:

  • JR Lines: Yamanote Line, Saikyo Line, and Shonan-Shinjuku Line.
  • Tokyo Metro: Ginza Line, Hanzomon Line, and Fukutoshin Line.
  • Tokyu Lines: Toyoko Line and Den-en-toshi Line.
  • Keio Inokashira Line.

If you arrive via JR Lines or Tokyo Metro, look for the Hachiko Exit for the closest access.

Hachiko Statue

Hachiko Statue in ShibuyaThe Hachiko Statue is a beloved landmark located just outside Shibuya Station, near the Hachiko Exit. It’s easy to spot as every day there are long lines of visitors waiting to take photos next to it. This bronze statue commemorates Hachi (later nicknamed as Hachiko), the loyal Akita dog who waited for his owner at Shibuya Station every day, even after his owner’s passing. Miyashita ParkMiyashita Park is a modern urban park and shopping mall located a short walk from Shibuya Tsutaya. Recently redeveloped on the site of the old Miyashita Park, it features green spaces along with shopping and dining spots, and a lively selection of izakayas on the ground floor. 

The park includes a rooftop area with sports facilities such as a skate park, a bouldering wall, and a multipurpose sports court, while the lower levels house a variety of trendy shops and restaurants, with a mix of local and international brands.
