It is a popular area especially for people who are planning on living by themselves, as opposed to people with large families.

1. Basic information of Akihabara

Before I go into specifics, it’s important to know that the following information is for the whole Chiyoda City (千代田区), which is the city where Akihabara is located.

When people say “Chiyoda City” or “Chiyoda-ku”, this refers to the ward of Chiyoda (Chiyoda city is one of the 23 wards that compose Central Tokyo).

Just like the basic info from above, the following is the market value for the whole Chiyoda City, which is the city where Akihabara is located.

Although not cheap, living around Akihabara is relatively more affordable compared to other wards such as Shinjuku or Shibuya. Of course, prices can vary a lot depending on the size, age, and location of the apartment.

3. Merits of living near Akihabara

You may already know what makes Akihabara famous. The abundant number of electronic shops and the wide variety of unique subculture theme shops (such as maid cafes, Anime, Manga, etc). Adding to this, Akihabara and its surrounding areas contain various historical and cultural sites. All these things make this area a unique and exiting place to live in.

Chiyoda city is also known for being the “Face of Tokyo” because of the Imperial Palace and also because most of the countries main political functions (such as congress) takes place there. Because of this, it is the least populated ward in all of central Tokyo.

Transportation wise, you shouldn’t have any inconveniance since you’ll be close to Tokyo station (it doesn’t get any more central than this).

And for those families with children, there’s good news. Medical expenditures are mostly free for people under 12th grade. Most wards in Tokyo will offer free medical assistance for children under 9th grade, but Chiyoda city is the only ward (out of the 23 wards) that offers this assistance to all citizens under 12th grade.
