Looking for a different kind of winter illumination away from the big crowds?

The illumination event “2023 SENDAI Matsushima Harbor Light in Matsushima Rikyu, Miyagi” will be held at Matsushima Rikyu, Miyagi Prefecture since 10 December, 2022 (Saturday) to March 31, 2023 (Friday).

Sendai is a city north of Tokyo, in the Tohoku region, famous for its castle and its samurai heritage. Sendai castle belonged to Date Masamune, a famous samurai in Japan since it was one of the most powerful feudal lords during the Edo period. The city is less than 2 hours away from Tokyo in Shinkasen so is a good option even for a one day trip.

The “2023 SENDAI Matsushima Harbor Light in Matsushima Rikyu, Miyagi Prefecture” illuminates approximately 300 trees in the facility’s garden and on the mountain behind the facility, including a Japanese maple tree. Around 160,000 lights in seven different colors will illuminate the entire area with vivid tones!

The water basin in the garden reflects the illuminated lights and interlocking images, making the scenery even more fantastic. Visitors can enjoy the gorgeous space illuminated by the lights and the stars and moon in the night sky.

Also, as a foreigner living in Japan for over 6 years I understand what kind of things are difficult when you move here and I want to help other people in the same situation that I have in the past.
