However, one of the best parts about moving is the choosing part.
Although it might be challenging to find the perfect valance between apartment features, location, and pricing, it is fun to envision yourself living in that place while checking out apartments.
Living in Shinjuku city
Many people tend to compare living in Shibuya to living in Shinjuku. Shibuya is more popular among the younger generations (university students) as opposed to Shinjuku being more popular among business people.
1. Basic information of Shinjuku City
Before I go into specifics, it’s important to know that there’s a difference between “Shinjuku” and “Shinjuku City”. When people just say “Shinjuku”, that usually refers to the area around Shinjuku station. However, when people say “Shinjuku City” or “Shinjuku-ku”, this refers to the ward of Shinjuku(Shinjuku city is one of the 23 wards that compose Tokyo).
Now that we have established what Shinjuku city is, the following is some basic information.
Area | 13.01 km2 |
Population | 347,434 |
Population density | 19,069/km2 |
Neighboring wards | Chiyoda city, Minato city, Bunkyo city, Shibuya city, Nakano city, and Toshima city |
2. Apartment Rent Market Value in Shinjuku city
Renting an apartment in Shinjuku city is relatively expensive. Although not as expensive as Shibuya, rent in Shinjuku rank in the higher spots when it comes to price. The following table shows the average market price of apartments in Shinjuku city. Of course, prices can vary a lot depending on the size, age, and location of the apartment.

3. Merits of becoming a Shinjuku citizen
Shinjuku has many reasons for being popular among foreigners as an area for living.
First, the convenience of transportation. Shinjuku Station is not only the largest train station in Japan (also being the busiest train station in the world), but it also has a large bus terminal where you can find buses that will take you pretty much anywhere within and out of Tokyo. So if you travel a lot (either for work-related reasons or just for fun), it doesn’t get any more convenient than living in Shinjuku.
Shinjuku is also a city of diversity. The LGBTQ culture in Japan starts here, and you will find many shops and restaurants focused on these themes. Also, you will notice a relatively larger percentage of foreigners working in convenience stores and restaurants within this area.
When it comes to medical aid systems for childbirth, Shinjuku city is one of the more generous wards. For most wards in Tokyo, the city will provide aid for 14 maternity checkups which usually cost anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 yen. In addition to this, Shinjuku city will provide aid for 3 ultrasound tests and 1 cervical cancer screening.
On the flipside, because of the convenience of living in this area, rent costs tend to be also relatively higher. So, it can be difficult to find a good place at a reasonable price.
4. Popular Spots in Shinjuku City
– 1st. Shinjuku Gyoen: This is a vast park located in the heart of Shinjuku. It is one of the most popular spots in Tokyo for cherry blossom viewing.
– 2nd. Kabukicho: known as the biggest red-light district in Tokyo where hundreds of restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and other red light establishments are located.
