Christian Dior, one of the world’s most famous French fashion house, has captivated many for decades. Whether it is a ready-to-wear, a perfume, or a gorgeous haute couture gown, their extraordinary designs have received continuous admiration worldwide. Despite his parent’s hopes for him to become a diplomat, his deep love of art led him in a different direction, initially taking over a small art gallery his father had bought him. However, due to the Great Depression in 1929, he was compelled to relinquish ownership of the gallery, which ultimately led him to enter the fashion world.
In Summer 2024 Tokyo is hosting the exhibition Miss Dior Exhibition: Stories of a Miss at Roppongi Museum from June 16 to July 15, 2024. About Miss Dior
In 1942, Christian Dior began working for couturier Lucien Lelong, collaborating alongside Pierre Balmain. Meanwhile, Dior’s younger sister, Catherine, joined the French Resistance, leading to her capture and imprisonment. Fortunately, she was released in 1945 and later worked as a flower merchant.
Christian Dior opened his first store in 1946 at 30 Avenue Montaigne, Paris.
In 1947, Dior held his very first show, and the world applauded his revolutionary “New Look”. Women wanted to outfit themselves in this sensational New Look, and the tremendous success of his first show led him to launch his debut perfume. While Dior struggled to find the name for his fragrance, Dior’s muse Mitzah Bricard, saw Cathrine walking into the room and exclaimed, “Look, there’s Miss Dior! And at that moment, Dior knew the fragrance was to be called Miss Dior, as a tribute to her beloved sister.
Flowers had always been a significant part of the siblings’ lives since childhood, so it was no surprise that they developed a deep love for them. This passion naturally led Dior to venture into the creation of perfumes.
