Winter culture in Japan
Before going to the list, let me explain a little bit about winter events in Japan. When we talk about winter, we usually refer to December through February. Winter is the season that ends the year and opens up the new year.
In Japanese culture, it is essential to finish up the current year and correctly welcome the new year. This involves many different personal and family-related activities. For example, on an individual level, many people like to clean up their house before welcoming the new year (this is not a regular clean-up but a thorough clean-up). Then, it is expected to decorate your house with things like Kadomatsu (門松) and Shimenawa (しめ縄), which are decorations that have their roots in Shintoism.
Many foods come into play during New years such as Toshikoshi Soba (年越し蕎麦), which you eat before the new year, and then Mochi (お餅) after welcoming the new year. Soba is a type of needle that breaks down relatively quickly, representing that all bad things from this year won’t continue until the new year.

Greetings to all mommies I am a supermom from Philippines. Previously, I worked and lived in Dubai for seven years, until 2015 the year I moved in Japan. Currently, I am happily settled here with my Japanese husband and our 7 months old baby. I could only describe my almost 6 years of living here as a roller coaster ride more so, after I gave birth to my son. Japan had changed me in ways unimaginable. It has influence my lifestyle, my perceptions and beliefs. I was able to witness firsthand the pros and cons of living in the country. From their language, culture and ethnicity, the people, place and in work. Those years were enough to give me quite personal and memorable experiences which I would be more than delighted to share with you.
