Innovation Unveiled: A Glimpse of Future Cities at Osaka Expo 2025
The highly anticipated Osaka Expo 2025 will showcase an innovative pavilion called “Future City.”
At a recent event, the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition unveiled the first set of details about this cutting-edge exhibition. Future City will focus on how we can create a harmonious society by integrating advanced technologies with sustainable living, all under the overarching concept of Society 5.0.
This large-scale pavilion, covering 4,800 square meters, will feature exhibits from 12 leading companies that will highlight future solutions to key global challenges.
About Expo 2025 in Osaka
The Expo 2025 in Osaka, themed “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” will be a platform where nations and industries collaborate to showcase innovations that address global challenges.
Scheduled from April to October 2025, the event will span over 155 hectares on Yumeshima Island, with participants from over 150 countries. The “Future City” pavilion is one of the key attractions, embodying the event’s mission to shape a more sustainable and prosperous future for all.
What is “Future City”?
“Future City” is designed around the concept of Society 5.0, a vision that aims to balance economic growth with solutions to social and environmental problems.
The pavilion’s theme, “Towards a City of Happiness,” invites visitors to explore the future of urban life through a blend of cyber and physical experiences. As part of the “Future Life Expo” initiative, the exhibition will showcase a unique fusion of innovation from different industries.
Visitors can expect to be immersed in cutting-edge technology, stunning visuals, and interactive experiences that will encourage reflection on what cities are for and how they can serve humanity better in the future.
Introduction of the Exhibitions
From here, let me introduce the 12 companies and their respective exhibitions. These exhibitions are divided into 5 different areas, each area with its unique theme.
1. Society 5.0 and the Future City
Hitachi, Ltd. & KDDI Corporation
The exhibit by Hitachi and KDDI offers an interactive theater experience where visitors actively participate in shaping a futuristic city. Set in 2035, visitors will engage with smart devices to explore solutions for social issues, using advanced “Cyber-Physical Systems” to simulate future scenarios. This exhibit emphasizes how collective actions can shape a more sustainable and human-centric urban future.
2. Environment and Energy
Niterra Co., Ltd.
Niterra introduces “CyclusNiterrium,” a showcase of circular resource technologies that produce sustainable energy from water and air. Visitors will embark on a virtual journey alongside living organisms equipped with these technologies, offering a glimpse into a future where environmental sustainability is at the core of urban living.
Hitachi Zosen Corporation
Hitachi Zosen’s “In the World Tree” exhibit centers around the concept of happiness for both humans and the Earth. Through immersive storytelling, visitors will learn how resource circulation and decarbonization technologies contribute to a brighter, sustainable future.
IHI Corporation
IHI invites visitors on a journey through water and air, showcasing their “Integrated Water Management System” and “Ammonia Value Chain” technologies. This thrilling exhibit uses a flying cube to highlight the importance of balancing nature and technology in future energy systems.
3. Transportation and Mobility
Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.
Kawasaki presents “Kawasaki Future World,” focusing on the human instinct to move. The exhibit highlights innovations in sustainable personal and mass mobility, offering real-size models that span land, sea, and air, designed to enhance freedom of movement while minimizing environmental impact.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd.
Mitsui’s “Wind Vision” exhibit features the “Wind Hunter,” a hybrid plant ship that uses wind to generate hydrogen. This visionary concept showcases how shipping can contribute to a greener future by harnessing the ultimate renewable energy: wind.
Kansai Transmission and Distribution, Inc.
Kansai Transmission demonstrates its “Smart Poles”—next-generation infrastructure that supports a wide range of services, including energy management, disaster prevention, and urban mobility. This exhibit highlights how future urban spaces will be enhanced through cyber-physical integration.
4. Manufacturing and Urban Development
Kobe Steel, Ltd.
Kobe Steel’s exhibit, “Link,” demonstrates the interconnected future of manufacturing. Through dynamic displays, visitors can explore how evolving technologies in production will pave the way for sustainable urban development and resource conservation.
Asunaro Aoki Construction Co., Ltd. & Komatsu Ltd.
This exhibit showcases advanced underwater construction technologies, essential for addressing climate change challenges. Attendees will experience remote-controlled robots that ensure safety and efficiency in disaster prevention and ecological restoration efforts.
CP Concrete Consortium
The “Journey of Possibilities” exhibit takes visitors on a journey through a future where CP Concrete, which continuously absorbs CO2, plays a pivotal role in combating global warming. Attendees can experience how this material will transform urban landscapes.
5. Food and Agriculture
KUBOTA Corporation
KUBOTA’s “Kubota Germination Lab” explores the future of agriculture in a way that is both planet-friendly and human-centered. The exhibit features innovative technologies that connect the production and consumption of food, highlighting sustainable practices that ensure food security for future generations.
*In addition to these five areas, there are three other areas (Common Exhibition 1, Common Exhibition 2, and the Theme Exhibition) that were announced in July.
