Tokyo Midtown: Entertainment Complex in Tokyo

Tokyo Midtown: Shop, eat and stay at Tokyo’s biggest complex building!

Imagine a 17‑acre government stronghold, off‑limits for decades, reborn in 2007 as Tokyo’s most ambitious urban infill project. Tokyo Midtown rises on the former Defense Agency campus, its 248 m tower crowning a 564,000 m² mix of offices, residences, shops, galleries, and a top‑tier medical clinic.

Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill with Nikken Sekkei, the development keeps 40 percent of its site wired to Hinokicho Park, a deliberate counterpoint to its high‑density core. Rather than a single use wrapped in shiny façades, Tokyo Midtown stitches civic green, cultural venues, and commercial aims into a unified whole; an urban laboratory more than a mere mall or hotel block.

What is Tokyo Midtown?

Tokyo Midtown

Tokyo Midtown (東京ミッドタウン) is a 569,000-square-meter (6.1 million square feet) mixed-use development located in the Akasaka/Roppongi area of Minato Ward, Tokyo. Completed in 2007 after three years of construction, it mirrors the ambition and scale of nearby  Roppongi Hills, integrating multiple land uses with a similar concept of “city within a city”, under a single master plan.

The complex comprises six buildings, including the 248 m Midtown Tower, and houses offices, condominiums, over 130 shops and restaurants, cafes, bars, the Suntory Museum of Art, and the 250‑room Ritz‑Carlton Tokyo hotel.

To temper the density, 40 percent of the 6.9 ha site is dedicated to Hinokicho Park, a five‑acre public green that links to the city’s surrounding parkland.  Its covered Galleria, designed by Colorado‑based CommArts, plus the adjacent park, is attractive enough for visitors to spend an entire day exploring this complex. It’s particularly recommended for a visit on rainy days!
