Kawasaki Daishi Temple: Perfect Temple to Visit for New Year’s Holidays

Worship to expel evil spirits and bad luck at Kawasaki Daishi Temple, Kanagawa Prefecture

Heikenji Temple (平間寺), which is also known as Kawasaki Daishi Temple (川崎大師) is one the most popular temples in Kanagawa Prefecture.

People has visited Kawasaki Daishi Temple to worship Kobo-Daishi since it was founded in 1128. Kobo-Daishi, the grand master of Shingon Buddhism, has been believed to expel evil spirits and bad luck.

The temple attracts about 3 millions visitors only for New Year’s holidays (January 1–3).

Kawasaki Daishi Temple is also popular among the people with Yakudoshi (厄年), which are superstitious unlucky ages in Japan.

The ages of Yakudoshi are here:
Male: 25, 42, 60
Female: 19, 33, 60

You can enjoy shopping Japanese-style confectionery and souvenirs while dining at Japanese food restaurants. Many shops are lined along Daishi Nakamise Shopping Street, the approach to the temple.

Access: 8 mins walk from Kawasaki-daishi Station (Keikyu Daishi Line)

Hours: 5:30AM to 6:00PM (April-September)/6:00AM to 5:30PM(October-March)

Hours (New Year’s Holidays): 0:00AM to 8:30PM (January 1)/6:00AM to 7:30PM (January 2, 3)
