Best Open-Air Ice Skating Rinks in Tokyo in Winter

One of most popular activities during winter is ice skating. And here in Tokyo, there are several spots where outdoor ice skating rinks are open for a limited time during winter. In this article, I will introduce 5 best ice skating spots in the heart of Tokyo where you can have a fun time 🙂 Enjoy ice skating with romantic light-ups and some warm food and drinks!


1. Urban Dock Lalaport Toyosu

The large shopping complex building, Urban Dock Lalaport Toyosu (アーバンドック ららぽーと豊洲) opens an outdoor ice skate rink “Sea Side Ice Skating Rink” on its seaside deck from early December to mid February this winter. The large skate rink (about 360 square meters) is set by the ocean, and visitors can enjoy ice skating with the view of the sea. After the sunset, the the deck will be illuminated with a romantic atmosphere. Toyosu is known as the new location of Tokyo’s biggest fish market which has been relocated from Tsukiji. Urban Dock Lalaport Toyosu is can be easily accessed from Toyosu Market.

2. Tokyo Midtown

Tokyo Midtown (東京ミッドタウン) is a mixed-use development located in Roppongi area, popular for shopping, dining and entertainments. It attracts visitors during the Christmas season by one of the most spectacular winter illuminations in Tokyo. Besides the Christmas illumination, Tokyo Midtown hosts another exciting winter event, featuring the large ice skating rink that takes place at their Grass Square through winter until end of February.

3. TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN ICE SKATING PARK

Tokyo Skytree (東京スカイツリー) is a top attraction of the city, and winter could be the most fun and exciting time to visit there as the scenic ice skating can be enjoyed at the foot of the iconic tower. TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN ICE SKATING PARK is held at Sky Arena, 4F of Tokyo Skytree Town right after New Year until early March. Highly recommended at night when the tower is has special light-up (until 25 December).

4. Futako Tamagawa RISE

Located along Tamagawa River in Setagaya Ward, Futako Tamagawa RISE (二子玉川ライズ) is a complex facility consists of numbers of shops, restaurants, offices, residence, cinema, hotel, and so on. The site holds a special winter event including spectacular illumination and the 390㎡ large ice skating rink at the Central Square.

5. Akasaka Sacas

Akasaka Sacas (赤坂サカス) is Tokyo’s newest mixed-use development such as Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown. The winter event “White Sacas” is held annually, and the main attraction is a large ice skating rink at Sacas Square along with several other attractions such as food vendors, light ups and a small aquarium. Ice skating classes are also available for beginners and kids with an additional charge.

+ Art Rink in Red Brick Warehouse Yokohama

This one is not exactly in Tokyo, but in Yokohama City in Kanagawa Prefecture, which is only 30 mins away from the central Tokyo. Art Rink in Red Brick Warehouse Yokohama (アートリンクin横浜赤レンガ倉庫) is a winter event held in Minatomirai area in Yokohama since 2005. Every year, a selected Artist will use this ice skate link as a canvas, turning it into the one and only “Art Rink”. Also till 25th December, there is a large Christmas Market held next to the skate rink where you can enjoy authentic European style Christmas food and drinks to warm you up 🙂
