Hakodate (函館) is a port city in southern tip of Hokkaido. It’s the third biggest city in Hokkaido after Sapporo and Asahikawa cities. Hakodate was Japan’s first foreign trade port opened in 1854 as a result of Convention of Kanagawa, and used to be the most important port in northern Japan.
Because of the trading history, Hakodate has lots of influence from foreign culture, and it’s the most exotic city of Hokkaido with the unique and beautiful cityscape. The significant landmarks of Hakodate includes “Fort Goryokaku” (Japan’s first Western style fortress) and “ Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses” (historic shopping complex).
Along with the beautiful cityscape, Hakodate is also known for its magnificent night view from Mt.Hakodate. The city has been awarded as the best city in Japan for the night view for many decades.
Hakodate is where best seafood can be tasted. Visit famous morning market “Hakodate Asaichi(函館朝市)” which is held daily from 5 am to around noon. The market can be accessed within a few minutes from JR Hakodate station.
Hakodate now can be visited by Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo (4 hours)! Also direct international flight to Hakodate Airport is available from Taiwan, South Korea and China!
