Oita Hello Kitty Airport to Open in 2025
Oita Airport will be transformed into "Oita Hello Kitty Airport" for the Expo 2025
Oita Prefecture and Sanrio Entertainment Co., Ltd., which operates Sanrio Character Park Harmonyland (in Hiji Town, Oita Prefecture), have announced a tourism campaign to coincide with the Osaka-Kansai Expo, which will be held for six months from 13 April to 13 October 2025.
The campaign aims to attract tourists from both Japan and abroad by taking place in conjunction with the Osaka-Kansai Expo.
As the first step, from 13 April 2025, the current Oita Airport will be transformed into Oita Hello Kitty Airport during the Expo, and Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters will be welcoming visitors under the concept of “the warmest airport in the world.”
In addition to the opening of Oita Hello Kitty Airport, a limited-time shuttle bus service (scheduled to run from August to October) to Harmonyland in Hiji Town, Oita Prefecture will also be operated. Harmonyland is one of only two Sanrio character parks in Japan (the other is Sanrio Puroland in Tokyo), and is a wonderful spot in Oita Prefecture with a charm that can be shared with the world.
In addition, various promotions aimed at promoting tourism both within and outside the prefecture will be rolled out, including setting up a booth at the Expo and collaborating with Tour de Kyushu 2025. Through this campaign, Oita Prefecture will promote its attractions to domestic and international travelers and revitalize the local economy.
