I have visited WANO AKARI X HYAKUDAN KAIDAN Illumination Festival last year, and here is my brief review of the event!

The entrance of the event was right in front of the main entrance of the hotel on 1st floor. There was a ticket vending machine that you can purchase the tickets on the same day. After purchasing the tickets, check in at the counter and take the lift to the 3rd floor which was the venue for the event.

WANO AKARI X HYAKUDAN KAIDAN Illumination Festival takes place at “Hyakudan Kaidan” area of Gajoen Hotel on 3F, the 80-year old wooden building that has been registered to a Tangible Cultural Property of Tokyo. The beautiful stare paths and inside the small rooms features Japanese-Western fusion style architecture with gorgeous and artistic interior. It’s also known as one of the places which inspired the creation of Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away .

Hyakudan Kaidan consists of 99 steps staircase with the ceiling with beautiful paint, and 7 Japanese style rooms. Each room displayed illumination artwork with different concepts featuring traditional Japanese themes and the latest technology and designs. One of the highlights of the event was the spectacular massive warrior floats of the famous Nabuta Festival from Aomori Prefecture.

Over 1,000 art and craft works by 63 artists are displayed at the event including numbers of colourful and instagram worthy photo spots. Photography is totally allowed at the event so make sure to take a lot of photos and post on social medias, too! There was also an official store where you can buy some of products from exhibits as well as traditional Japanese themed souvenirs.
