Aoshima (青島)
There are 6,852 islands in Japan and some of them has very unique features. Today, I would like to introduce one island where cats conquer. Aoshima (青島) is located on Seto Inland Sea in Ehime prefecture, western Japan.
Aoshima Island is where cats outnumber people, approximately 6 times more. There are approx 100 cats live on this small island while only 15 human does. Recently, the island has got loads of attentions worldwide since the video of Aoshima and the resident cats was posted on YouTube and went viral.
Aoshima is now a popular touristic attraction, especially for cat lovers. The island can be visited by ferry which runs daily (twice a day) from Nagahama port. Be welcomed by a hundred of cats and enjoy strolling around the countryside island with the sounds of miaoooooww 😉
If you are planing to visit Aoshima island, make sure to catch the return ferry as the island is not touristic at all with no accommodations nor shops. It’s a small and quiet island which cats and people live peacefully, so respect the locals.
