Have you ever heard of sea of clouds (called Unkai “雲海” in Japanese) ? A sea of clouds is an overcast layers of clouds which is the effect by trade winds. In short, clouds and fog which are moving from across wide area, mainly on mountains. The natural phenomenon is rarely seen scenery because you only can see when the weather conditions are perfect.
In northern of Japan, there is a really fantastic spot to see the sea of clouds called Unkai Terrace. Unkai Terrace is a part of the all season resort Hoshino Resort Tomamu, and is situated at an altitude of 1,088 meters from sea level at the mountains of Hidaka and Tokachi in the center of Hokkaido. Although Unkai Terrace belongs to Hoshino Resort Tomamu, it can be visited by non hotel guests, too.
The Unkai Terrace is open from May to October and can be visited by gondola which run from 4:30 in the morning. There are a several observation facilities at the terrace, offering a dynamic view of sea of clouds when the weather condition is good including the cloud shaped path, observation spot, hammock pool and counter seats. There are also a shop and cafe at the terrace where you can enjoy unique cloud-themed food and souvenirs.
