Jojakkoji Temple (常寂光寺) is a quiet and pleasant temple surrounded by the beautiful nature on the mountainside of Ogura mountain in Arashiyama area, Kyoto city. The temple was founded in 1596, by the 16th head priest of Honkoku-ji, Priest Nisshin, during the Keicho era (1596–1615).
The best scenic point of the temple would be the 12 m tall pagoda surrounded by trees. The temple is situated on the slope of the mountain and offers great overlook views of Arashiyama area.
The temple is rich in nature and there are moss and over 200 maple trees at the site, offering amazing scenery in green in spring and summer time. In autumn, maple trees turn into bright red and warm orange, attracting huge numbers of visitors during the season. In winter, the pure white snow covers the site of the temple and creates the stunning view.
Apart from autumn leaves season, Jojakkoji Temple is not as crowded as other popular historic sites in Kyoto, but it’s a great place to escape from the crowds and take a moment to appreciate the true beauty of Kyoto.
