teamLab Biovortex Kyoto to Open in Autumn 2025
teamLab to Open a Permanent Immersive Art Museum in Kyoto in Autumn 2025
Art collective teamLab has announced the launch of a new permanent immersive museum, “teamLab Biovortex Kyoto”, set to open in autumn 2025 in the southeastern area of Kyoto Station. This upcoming museum marks teamLab’s first-ever permanent location in Kyoto, adding to their growing portfolio of boundary-pushing digital art spaces around the world.
A New Creative Hub for Kyoto
“teamLab Biovortex Kyoto” is part of a broader urban revitalization initiative led by the City of Kyoto, aiming to create a cultural and creative hub centered around art, youth, and innovation. The museum will be developed on city-owned land as a core facility within this project, in collaboration with local companies rooted in Kyoto and Osaka.
Immersive Art Beyond the Physical
The museum will feature a range of artworks that challenge conventional notions of physical reality. Visitors will be able to step bodily into and become part of the works, with many of the pieces offering interactive, immersive, and constantly evolving experiences. Among the highlights of the exhibition are:
- Massless Amorphous Sculpture
A massive, floating sculpture born from a sea of foam, this work transcends the concept of mass. Even when people physically enter it, the sculpture maintains its form and self-repairs — creating a seamless fusion of digital and physical interaction. - Massless Suns and Dark Suns
A dynamic constellation of glowing orbs that shift and evolve based on human presence. As observers widen their perception, dark spheres begin to appear. These objects exist not in the physical world but within the viewer’s perceptual reality — making each experience uniquely personal. - Morphing Continuum
A transcendent work composed of elements that stretch across space and time. This shape-shifting entity retains its integrity even as people immerse themselves inside it, continuously regenerating and transforming. - Traces of Life
An interactive artwork where visitors’ movements leave behind ephemeral traces, symbolizing the interconnectedness of individuals and the collective experience within the art space.
These artworks embody teamLab’s core philosophy of blending science, technology, art, and nature, inviting visitors to reconsider the boundaries between themselves and the world around them.
An Expanding Universe of teamLab Experiences
teamLab is renowned for its large-scale exhibitions in Tokyo (teamLab Planets and Borderless) and worldwide. The Kyoto opening builds on the success of previous teamLab installations, promising new and never-before-seen works specifically developed for this location.
The museum will be housed in a newly built cultural complex that may include an art center and other creative facilities. This space aims not only to attract tourists and art lovers but also to contribute to local urban development and community engagement.
