Best Fireworks in Tokyo 2023 Summer

When we talk about what’s the best thing about Japanese summer, many people would answer “fireworks (Hanabi (花火) in Japanese)”. Fireworks are a symbol of Japanese summer, and it’s one of the most exciting event of the year. Fireworks festivals (Hanabi Taikai (花火大会) in Japanese) are held at many locations across Japan during summer including Tokyo. Tokyo hosts a number of spectacular fireworks including the famous Sumida River Fireworks, the oldest fireworks festival in Japan.

In this article, I’d like to share the list of upcoming fireworks in Tokyo this year! If you are visiting Tokyo this summer, you should definitely go and watch them and see how Japan celebrates summer!

-Adachi Fireworks Festival

Adachi FireworksFestival (足立の花火) is a large-scale fireworks event that attracts over 600,000 visitors every year. It’s held around Arakawa River bank in Adachi ward, Tokyo. The event was cancelled for the last 3 years due to the effect of COVID-19, but it will be back this year. It will display around 15,000 fireworks over the Arakawa River in one hour.

-Katsushika Fireworks Festival

Katsushika Fireworks Festival (葛飾納涼花火大会) is held annually by Edogawa River in Shibamata area, Tokyo. This year, the event will be held for the first time in four year and the number of fireworks is planned to be increased from 13,000 to 200,000.

-Sumida River Fireworks Festival

Sumida River Fireworks Festival (隅田川花火大会) is the largest and oldest fireworks in Tokyo with the history began back in Edo period. It’s held on the last Saturday of July annually, and around 22,000 colourful and spectacular fireworks are launched at the event in 90 mins.

-Tachikawa Showa Memorial Park Fireworks Festival

Tachikawa Showa Memorial Park Fireworks Festival (立川まつり国営昭和記念公園花火大会)  is held annually at Showa Memorial Park (or Showa Kinen Park), the largest park in Tokyo with a 165.3 ha space. About 5,000 fireworks are launched in one hour.

-Koto Fireworks Festival

Koto Fireworks Festival (江東花火大会) is a traditional summer event held along the Arakawa River in Koto ward, Tokyo. The event features around 4,000 fireworks launched from the river. It’s usually held on a weekday in early August, so it’s much less crowded than other fireworks events in Tokyo.

-Ichikawa Shimin Fireworks Festival

Ichikawa Shimin Fireworks Festival (市川市民納涼花火大会) is a large-scale fireworks event that is held together with Edogawa Fireworks Festival. The event features 14,000 fireworks, and in particular, the 1,000 of them are launched in the opening 5 seconds, which is very spectacular.

-Edogawa Fireworks Festival

Edogawa Fireworks Festival (江戸川花火大会) is a large-scale fireworks festival that has been running over 40 years. It’s now hosted together with Edogawa ward and Ichikawa city. Approx 14,000 fireworks are launched in 75 mins with various style and effects.

-Itabashi Fireworks Festival (TBA)

Itabashi Fireworks Festival (いたばし花火大会) is held annually in Itabashi ward, Tokyo. About 12,000 fireworks are displayed with various colours and shapes. The best highlight of the event is the 700m-long “Great Niagara Falls” which is the largest scale in Kanto region.

-Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival (TBA)

Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival (神宮外苑花火大会) is the most urban and accessible fireworks in Tokyo which is held with a musical concert. At the Jingu Stadium, visitors can enjoy musical performance while watching fireworks. Approx 12,000 fireworks will be launched and light up the sky of summer night.
