Fireworks (Hanabi (花火) in Japanese) are a symbol of Japanese summer, and fireworks festival (Hanabi Taikai (花火大会) in Japanese) is one of the most exciting events in summer.

Fireworks festivals are held at many locations across Japan during summer and visitors can enjoy watching colourful, spectacular fireworks, along with traditional music and street food sold at stalls. Japanese people often dress up for fireworks, too, wearing Yukata, lightweight summer Kimono. Visiting fireworks festivals is not only about watching fireworks, but it’s one of the best experiences to learn the authentic Japanese summer culture.

Tokyo hosts several fireworks through the summer including the famous Sumida River Fireworks, the oldest fireworks festival in Japan. In this article, I’d like to share the list of upcoming fireworks in Tokyo this year! Best Fireworks in Tokyo 2025

Adachi Fireworks Festival

Adachi Fireworks Festival (足立の花火) is a large-scale fireworks event held annually around Arakawa River bank in Adachi ward, Tokyo. Approx 15,000 fireworks are launched over the Arakawa River in one hour, attracting over 700,000 viewers every year. The Adachi Fireworks Festival has traditionally been held in late July, but due to health risks such as heatstroke and the risk of cancellation due to weather (wind, rain, thunder, typhoons, temperature, etc.), it has been decided to change the date of the festival to the end of May.

JRA Tokyo Racecourse Fireworks

The 2025 Tokyo Racecourse Fireworks will be held under the theme of “J-POP BEST” to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Showa era. 14,000 fireworks will be set off by Japan’s top fireworks team to the tune of J-POP hits that everyone has heard. The fireworks can be viewed from an incredible distance, just 100 meters from the launch site. You can experience a spectacular production that combines music and light up close.

Katsushika Fireworks Festival

Katsushika Fireworks Festival (葛飾納涼花火大会) is held annually by Edogawa River in Shibamata area, Tokyo. Visitors can enjoy the dynamic fireworks up close. Last year, the event was held for the first time in four year, featuring the largest number of fireworks ever. Approx 15,000 fireworks will be launched in one hour.

Sumida River Fireworks Festival (隅田川花火大会) is the largest-scale and oldest fireworks event in Tokyo with the history began back in Edo period. It’s held on the last Saturday of July annually, and around 20,000 colourful and spectacular fireworks are launched at two venues by Sumida River in 90 mins.

Tachikawa Showa Memorial Park Fireworks Festival

Tachikawa Showa Memorial Park Fireworks Festival (立川まつり国営昭和記念公園花火大会 is held annually at Showa Memorial Park (or Showa Kinen Park), the largest park in Tokyo with a 165.3 ha space. About 5,000 fireworks are launched in one hour.

Koto Fireworks Festival

Koto Fireworks Festival (江東花火大会) is a traditional summer event held along the Arakawa River in Koto ward, Tokyo. The event features around 6,000 fireworks launched from the river. It’s usually held on a weekday in early August, so it’s much less crowded than other fireworks events in Tokyo that are mostly held on weekends.

Ichikawa Shimin Fireworks Festival

Ichikawa Shimin Fireworks Festival (市川市民納涼花火大会) is a large-scale fireworks event that is held together with Edogawa Fireworks Festival. The event features 14,000 fireworks, and in particular, the 1,000 of them are launched in the opening 5 seconds, which is very spectacular.

Edogawa Fireworks Festival

Edogawa Fireworks Festival (江戸川花火大会) is a large-scale fireworks festival that has been running over 40 years. It’s now hosted together with Edogawa ward and Ichikawa city. Approx 14,000 fireworks are launched in 75 mins with various style and effects.

Itabashi Fireworks Festival

Itabashi Fireworks Festival (いたばし花火大会) is held annually in August in Itabashi ward, Tokyo, together with Toda City, Saitama Prefecture on the other side of the Arakawa River. About 15,000 colourful fireworks are launched from both sides of the river. The best highlight of the event is the 700m-long “Great Niagara Falls” which is the largest scale in Kanto region.

Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival (神宮外苑花火大会) is the most urban and accessible fireworks in Tokyo which is held with a musical concert. At the Jingu Stadium, visitors can enjoy musical performance while watching fireworks. Approx 10,000 fireworks will be launched and light up the sky of summer night.
