What is Kyubey Sushi

Kyubey (久兵衛) is one of the best and most famous Sushi restaurants in Tokyo, and possibly in the whole world.

Keeping their tradition, Sushi Kyubey has been serving the best quality Sushi with the selected fresh seafood ingredients and chefs’ finest techniques since 1935. Kyubey attracts and impresses guests not only in Japan, but from all over the world, and it’s often described as “a mecca for sushi lovers.” The restaurant is now owned by Yosuke Imada, a second-generation manager and renowned Sushi chef. Kyubey currently has 5 branches in Tokyo and Osaka in total, and the main restaurant is located in Ginza, Tokyo.

Kyubey is often compared to another great sushi restaurant in Tokyo, the Michelin three-starred Sukiyabashi Jiro, which is also located in the Ginza area. While Sukiyabashi Jiro is extremely difficult to book, Kyubey is slightly easier to reserve and more affordable, yet the quality and taste of the sushi are comparable.

Kyubey hasn’t received a Michelin star for several years, yet it was chosen as the second-best restaurant in the world in 2018 by La Liste, another prestigious and highly influential global food guide.

You may think spending a lot of money for one single dining experience is not worth it, but you will surely not regret having a top-notch sushi experience in Tokyo at least once in a lifetime! For a more economical option, Sushi Kyubey offers a lunch course that is cheaper than the dinner course.

Tourist Reviews of Ginza Kyubey Honten

Ginza Kyubey Honten is one of Tokyo’s most esteemed sushi restaurants, renowned for its exquisite omakase experience and exceptional quality of fish. With a Google rating of 4.3 (2,308 reviews), a TripAdvisor score of 4.5 (903 reviews), and an impressive Yelp rating of 4.7 (140 reviews), it remains a top choice for sushi lovers visiting the city.

A TripAdvisor reviewer described their memorable dining experience:

“This was a real experience! Shoes off at the door and we were seated around a 10-seat open table with the chefs preparing the food in front of us. Some of the fish was unreal—we’ve had lots of sushi but never this quality of fish. At 22,000 yen for the set menu, it is expensive, and we were probably only there about 80 minutes, but we ate so much. It was certainly a memorable meal. The proud owner came out and gave us an article from years ago showing it to be the best sushi restaurant in Tokyo!”

―from TripAdvisor

Another diner on Yelp praised the freshness and preparation of the sushi:

“Really good omakase experience. Sushi was really fresh and well prepared, one of the best experiences in Tokyo. Service was very welcoming. I have been to a few other highly recommended places, but Kyubey stood out. Definitely recommend!”

―from Yelp

Guests consistently highlight the high quality of fish, expert preparation by the chefs, and the warm hospitality at Kyūbey. Though it comes at a premium price, the restaurant offers a truly authentic and unforgettable sushi experience in the heart of Ginza.
