Klimt Alive in Tokyo: Japan’s First Immersive Gustav Klimt Exhibition

Step into a Golden World of Light, Music, and Masterpieces

Klimt Alive

This summer, Tokyo welcomes Klimt Alive, a large-scale immersive exhibition dedicated to the golden masterpieces of Austrian painter Gustav Klimt. Held at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall, this groundbreaking event transforms Klimt’s iconic works into a multi-sensory experience using light, music, and projection technology—offering visitors a dreamlike journey into the world of fin-de-siècle Vienna.

About Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was a leading figure of the Vienna Secession movement and one of the most prominent artists of fin-de-siècle Vienna. Known for his distinctive “Golden Period,” Klimt created sensuous, decorative paintings that combined Byzantine mosaics, Art Nouveau patterns, and erotic symbolism. His most famous works include “The Kiss,” “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I,” and “Judith I,” which feature his signature use of gold leaf and intricate ornamental designs. A passionate cat lover, Klimt was often photographed with his feline companions in his Vienna studio.

The exhibition projects Klimt’s masterpieces, including “The Kiss,” “Judith I,” and “Death and Life,” onto massive screens in a 7-meter-high darkened space. Visitors experience these iconic works through immersive technology combining visuals, classical music, and strategic lighting. The entire venue allows photography and video recording, with special photo locations for Instagram-worthy shots.

Hi, I'm delighted to get to meet you through my sharing. I am a freelance writer who loves traveling, reading, and food. I'm also the mother of a two-year-old child. Living in Japan for eight years has been both long and short—long enough for me to know Tokyo, where I reside, like the back of my hand, and short because there are still so many aspects waiting for me to explore. Here, I will share the fantastic culture and my thoughts about this beautiful country, hoping you will fall in love with Japan just as I have.
