Sumikkogurashi (すみっコぐらし) is a set of cute fictional characters produces by the Japanese company San-X, who is known for creating cute characters including Rilakkuma and Tarepanda. The characters of Sumikkogurashi were designed by a graphic designer Yuri Yokomizo, and debuted in 2012.
The name “Sumikkogurashi” means “life in the corner” and the characters resemble animals and food items such as Shirokuma (polar bear), Penguin? (penguin), Tonkatsu (pork cutlet), Neko (cat) and Tokage (dinosaur). In addition to those 5 main characters, over 60 characters were created in total, for merchandise, books, video games, Youtube channel and three animated films.
In July 2024, a new character “Ebiten no Shippo” first appeared with the theme “Tenshi no Ebiten idol” and became a hot topic on X with 16,000 RTs and 60,000 likes on the same day. Ebiten no Shippo (means a leftover tail of shrimp tempura) works hard to become a popular idol so that maybe people would eat the leftover.
This time, a themed cafe of Sumikkogurashi focusing on “Angel Ebiten idol” will open for a limited time in Oshiage, Tokyo. The Sumikkogurashi Cafe ~Tenshi no Ebiten idol~ will offer a special menu with a variety of cute and photo-worthy food and drinks, featuring adorable Sumikkogurashi characters as well as cafe’s original merchandise.
The cafe will open from 20 September to 4 November 2024 inside Tokyo Solamachi, a shopping and entertainment complex at the base of Tokyo Skytree. Enjoy the special time at the cafe with adorable Sumikkogurashi characters this autumn!
