Event List in Tokyo This Week (January 30 to February 5, 2023)
The best events, activities, and exhibitions held this week in Tokyo

In Japan, people tend to say autumn is the perfect season to get in touch with culture such as literature, art, food, etc. Because of this, it is also a season when you’ll see many cultural events across Japan, especially, in Tokyo.
Tokyo, being such a large city, has many events happening simultaneously. Because of this, it might be difficult to keep track of events that you’d be interested in. From art exhibitions, theatrical performances, and musical concerts to cultural festivals and seasonal food-related events. And some of these events are just a couple of days long.
That’s where this article will hopefully come in handy. I have created a list of events for this week in Tokyo. If you live in Tokyo and have some free time, or if you happen to be visiting Tokyo during this week, then I hope at least one of these events will interest you to check it out.
Winter culture in Japan
Before going to the list, let me explain to you a little bit about winter events in Japan. When we talk about winter, we usually refer to December through February. Winter is the season that ends the year and at the same time opens up the new year.
In Japanese culture, it is very important to finish up the current year and welcome the new year in a correct manner. This involves many different personal and family-related activities. For example, on a personal level, many people like to clean up their house before welcoming the new year (this is not a regular clean up, but a thorough clean up). Then it is common to decorate your house with things like Kadomatsu (門松) and Shimenawa (しめ縄) which are decorations that have their roots in Shintoism.
There are also many foods that come into play during new years such as Toshikoshi Soba (年越し蕎麦) which you eat before the new year, and then Mochi (お餅) after welcoming the new year. Soba is a type of needle that breaks down relatively easily, representing that all bad things from this year won’t continue on to the new year.
Now that you know a little bit about winter-related Japanese culture, here is the event list in Tokyo this week (January 30 to February 5, 2023).
