Autumn culture in Japan
Before we go to the list of events this weekend, let me share with you some information regarding Autumn events in Japan.
Autumn in Japan is a season when people tend to focus on spending time getting in touch with culture, so much so that there is a phrase that well represents this: Bunka no Aki (文化の秋) which means “Autumn for culture”. This is something that has been said since a long time ago, having different reasons depending on the discipline or activity. Here are some examples.
Supo-tsu no aki (スポーツの秋) means “Autumn for sports” and this phrase comes from the fact that the Tokyo Olympics of 1964 were held in October. There is also the fact that Autumn is the perfect season to do sports due to its temperature.
Dokusho no aki (読書の秋) means “Autumn for reading” and it became popular after Japanese writer Natsume Soseki (夏目漱石) referenced an old poem stating that autumn is the best season for reading because of the temperature.
Shokuyoku no aki (食欲の秋) means “Autumn for hunger”. This phrase is said because there are so many delicious seasonal foods such as chestnuts, sweet potatoes, persimmon, and pacific saury among others.
Geijutsu no aki (芸術の秋) means “Autumn for art” and the origin of this phrase comes from a magazine all the way back in 1918, stating that Autumn is the perfect season to contemplate and create art because, as you can imagine, of the nice weather.
