Autumn events in Japan

Autumn is a special season in Japan when it comes to cultural events. It is the season when temperatures aren’t either too hot or too cold, making it an ideal time to hold outdoor events. There are many events that have to do with national holidays such as Supo-tsu no Hi (スポーツの日) or “Sports day” which commemorates the Tokyo Olympics of 1964 and Bunka no Hi (文化の日) or “Culture day” which is a day to promote culture and arts.

There are also various events that have to do with the maple leaves turning red. The Kansai area is especially popular for having many places where you can visit and enjoy the beautiful colors displayed by these trees. Many places have night illuminations to enhance this experience as well.

Being autumn, there are also many events having to do with food. Autumn is the season of harvest, so you will encounter various Shrines having a Matsuri (harvest festival). Many restaurants and hotels also tend to have food fairs of seasonal ingredients such as chestnuts, sweet potatoes, persimmon, and pacific saury among others.

Now that you know a little bit about autumn-related Japanese culture, here is the event list in Osaka this week (September 25 to October 1, 2023).
