Japanese flower season kicks off in mid March with the cherry blossom storms, and more and more beautiful and colourful flowers start flourishing all the way through summer. Flowers are one of the best seasonal attractions in Japan that you can enjoy only for a limited time of the year!

1. Yamanakako Hanano Miyako Park

Yamanakako Hanano Miyako Park (花の都公園) is a popular flower park located by Lake Yamanaka (Yamanakako) at the foot of Mt Fuji. Wide variety of flowers can be seen in this 300,000 m2 vast park through the year, and Poppy, Zinnia and Sunflower are in their season from mid June to late August. Enjoy the dramatic view of colourful flowers and Mt Fuji!

2. Bunkyo Hydrangea Festival

Hydrangea is one of most beloved flowers in Japan, which flourishes usually during rainy season (from mid to late June). One of five flower festivals in Bunkyo ward, Tokyo, Bunkyo Hydrangea Festival (文京あじさいまつり) is held in mid June annually, featuring over 3,000 hydrangea flowers spread through Hakusan Shrine to Hakusan Park. There will be numbers of special events during the festival.

3. Lake Kawaguchiko Herb Festival

Lake Kawaguchiko Herb Festival (河口湖ハーブフェスティバル) is an annual flower festival held around Lake Kawaguchiko, one of five lakes on the foot of Mt Fuji. The event is set at two venues: Yagizaki Park and Oishi Park at the shore of the lake. The event features numbers of herbs and flowers including over 100,000 lavenders, and the glorious view of Mt Fuji in the background. There will be also a market at the site selling crafts, local products and food including lavender-flavored ice cream.

4. Iriya Asagao Festival

Iriya Asagao Festival (入谷朝顔まつり) is a flower event held in Iriya Kishimojin (Shingen-ji Temple) for 3 days from 6 to 8 July every year. The event features the iconic summer flower, Asagao (or Japanese morning glory) and it’s the biggest Asagao market in Japan, originally started in Edo period. Around 60 Asagao vendors and 90 stalls gather for the event from early morning till evening.

5. Tambara Lavender Park

Tambara Lavender Park (たんばらラベンダーパーク) is the largest lavender park in Kanto region, which can be accessed within 2 hours from Tokyo. It’s located at the hill of 1,300 m above sea level in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture. Charming and fragrant Lavenders and several other flowers can be enjoyed at this highland with cool breeze.

6. Hozuki Ichi

Hozuki Market (ほおずき市) is held annually at Sensoji Temple in Asakusa on 9th and 10th July. The event features Chinese lantern plant (Hozuki in Japanese), and it’s believed that visiting Asakusa Kannon Temple (Sensoji Temple) on those days is worth praying 46,000 days. Around 120 vendors sell potted Chinese lantern plant in various sizes at the event.

7. Kiyose Sunflower Festival

Kiyose Sunflower Festival (清瀬ひまわりフェスティバル) is an annual flower festival held every August since 2008. The venue is located in Kiyose City, the suburb of Tokyo near Saitama Prefecture. Over 100,000 Sunflowers bloom at the vast field of 24,000 square meters. The city can be accessed within 1 hour from the central Tokyo by Seibu-Ikebukuro line (direct from Ikebukuro Station).

8. Zama Sunflower Festival

Zama Sunflower Festival (座間のひまわりまつり) is annual flower festival held at Zama City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Zama City can be accessed by Odakyu Line which runs from Shinjuku Station and it takes about 1 hour. The event is held in mid August at Zama venues, featuring over 550,000 Sunflowers flourish.
